allgemein bekannt als “Captain” oder “Major” Knapp, wurde am 28. November 1837 zu Wadril im Kreis Trier, Preussen, geboren. Er besuchte die Elementarschule seiner Heimath, kam am 8. Juli 1852, 14 Jahre alt, nach Syracuse. Er erlernte das Cigarrenmachen und als der Bürgerkrieg ausbrach, liess er sich für Comp. B, des 149. N. Y. Freiwilligen Regiments anwerben und hat alle Schlachten und Märsche dieses Regiments mitgemacht, die an anderer Stelle beschrieben sind, ausser die Schlacht bei Gettysburg. Er gerieth in Gefangenschaft und hat 6 Wochen lang Gelegenheit gehabt, die Schrecken und das Elend des berüchtigten Libby Gefängnisses aus eigener bitterer Erfahrung kennen zu lernen. Seine militärische Laufbahn war der Art, das Herr Knapp mit Recht darauf stolz sein kann. Nachdem er eine Zeit lang als Armee Courier gedient hatte, wurde er zum Seconde-Lieutenant befördert, darauf zum Premier-Lieutenant, Hauptmann und schliesslich Major. Aus dem Kriege zurückgekehrt, trat er mit seinem Halbbruder, Herrn Nicholas Peters Sr., in Geschäftsverbindung u. verblieb darin von 1865-1884, als er sich in’s Privatleben zurückzog. Herr Knapp ist eine der prominentesten Figuren des hiesigen Deutschthums und wurde wiederholt mit öffentlichen Aemtern betraut. So war er 1871 Stadtrathsmitglied der 2ten Ward, diente als Polizei-Commissär von 1875-82 und 1884 als Strassen-Superintendent. Er verheirathete sich mit Frl. Lisetta Elisabetha Egelhoff, hat ein Kind und wohnt No. 422 Kirkpatrickstrasse.

He attended elementary school in his home town and came at the age of 14 years, on 8 July 1852, to Syracuse. He learned to make cigars, and when the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Company B of the 149th N. Y. Volunteer Regiment and participated in all their battles and marches that are described elsewhere here, except for the Battle of Gettysburg. He was captured and had the chance for six long weeks to learn from his own bitter experience the frights and miseries of the notorious Libby Prison. Mr. Knapp has every right to pride himself upon his military career. After serving for a long time as an army courier, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant, then to First Lieutenant, then Captain, then finally Major. After returning home from the war, he went into business with his half-brother, Mr. Nicholas Peters Sr., from 1865 until 1884, when he retired to private life. Mr. Knapp is one of the most prominent figures among the local German populace, and has been repeatedly entrusted by them with public offices. So it was that in 1872 he became City Councilman from the Second Ward, served as Police Commissioner from 1875 to 1882, and was Street Commissioner in 1884. He is married to the former Miss Lisetta Elisabetha Egelhoff, has one child, and lives at No. 422 Kirkpatrick Street.
