Johann Winter,
geboren im Jahre 1825 in Niedermörlen bei Bad Nauheim im Grossherzogthum Hessen, kam 1848 nach Amerika und ’49 nach Syracuse. Herr Winter ist einer der ältesten jetzt noch lebenden Pioniere. Er war Mitglied des 1. Turnvereins (genannt die 48er), gehörte zu der ersten deutschen Musikkapelle, zu den schwarzen Jägern, und der Washington Artillerie Compagnie. In ’53 erlernte er die Kunst des Daguerrotypirens und brachte es darin zu einem hohen Grad der Vollkommenheit. Er malte Portraits und die ersten Photographien in Oelferbe und hat für verschiedene Kunstausstellungen 6 Diplomas und 2 Medaillons erhalten. In ’55 etablirte er sich als Photograph und sein Atelier ist somit das älteste in hiesiger Staet. Er ist der Erfinder des Stereoptican Cyclorama (Panorama), besitzt mehrere Patente für photographische Apparate und ist Korrespondent mehrerer photographischer Journale. Sein Interesse für das hiesige Deutschthum ist heute noch ebenso gross wie je zuvor, und es ist allbekannt, das er es nie an Interesse für deutsche Unternehmungen hat fehlen lassen. Johann Winter, born in the year 1825 in Niedermörlen bei [near] Bad Nauheim in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, came to America in 1848 and then to Syracuse in 1849. Mr. Winter is one of the oldest pioneers still living. He was a member of the first Turn Verein (called The Forty-Eighters), belonged to the first German band, to the Black Hunters, and the Washington Artillery Company. In 1853 he learned the art of producing Daguerreotypes and achieved in it a high degree of perfection. He painted portraits and the first photographs in oil painting and received 6 diplomas and 2 medallions for different art exhibitions. In 1855 he established himself as a photographer and his studio is thus the oldest in the State. He is the inventor of the Stereoptican Cyclorama (Panorama), holds several patents for photographic equipment, and writes as a Correspondent for several photographic journals. His interest in the local German community is today as keen as ever it was, and is well-known by all, never missing from the scene of German enterprises.
