Jacob Schwarz
wurde am 20. Mai 1840 in Frankfurt am Main, geboren und kam mit seinen Eltern im Jahre 1848 nach Syracuse. Er besuchte die öffentlichen Schulen und erlernte dann das Maurer-Handwerk. Als der Bürgerkrieg ausbrach, trat er in die deutsche Compagnie B, des 149. Regiments und diente bis zum Ende des Krieges. In der Schlacht bei Chancellorsville gerieth er in die feindliche Gefangenschaft und hat alle Schrecknisse der Libby und Belle Isle Gefängnisse aus Erfahrung kennen gelernt. Er war Sergeant und wurde zum Lieutenant befördert, jedoch nicht als solcher eingemustert. Im Jahre ’74 wurde er zum Stadt-Assessor erwählt und hat dieses Amt bis heutigen Tages behalten und zur allgemeinen Zufriedenheit verwaltet. Am 28. Dezember 1865 verheirathete er sich mit Fräulein Elisabeth W. König von hier und hatte 3 Kinder, von welchen jedoch nur noch eins lebt. Er wohnt No. 602 Ashstrasse. [page 294]
