Johann Wilhelm Juhl wurde am 18. Jan. 1842 in Gettorf, Provinz Schleswig (Holstein) geboren, in der Ortschule seiner Heimath ausgebildet und erlernte das Kunstschreiner-Handwerk. Nachdem er in verschiedenen grossen Städten Deutschlands gearbeitet, ging er 1865 von Cöln aus nach Paris, wo er in einer französischen Fabrik als Werkführer Anstellung fand. Hier verheirathete er sich am 16. April 1870 mit einer Deutschen, Margaretha Walraff. Als der Krieg ausbrach, wurden sie wie Tausende von Deutschen, Ende August 1870 aus Frankreich ausgewiesen und liessen sich in Cöln nieder. Auf Zureden eines hier wohnenden Landsmannes wanderte er mit Frau und Kind 1873 nach Amerika aus und kam am 13. Mai 1873 nach Syracuse. Im Herbst ’76 zog er nach Ithaca, von wo er ’79 nach hier zurückkehrte. Seine erste Frau starb ’78 in Ithaca, mit Hinterlassung einer Tochter, Elise. Heirathete zum zweiten Mal am 16. Feb. ’81, und zwar Frl. Friederike Müller. Herr Juhl geniesst einen guten Ruf als Kunsttischler und ist überall hoch geachtet und geschätzt. Wohnt No. 611 Catherinestrasse. [pages 273 and 274]

After working in several different large German cities, he went in 1865 from Cologne to Paris, where he found work as a foreman in a French factory. While there he married a German girl, Margaretha Walraff, on 16 April 1870. When the [Franco-Prussian] war broke out, like thousands of other Germans, they were expelled from France at the end of August, 1870, and ended up in Cologne. At the urging of a compatriot here, he and his wife and child came to America in 1873 and came to Syracuse on 13 May 1873. In autumn of 1876 they moved to Ithaca, and in 1879 moved back here. His first wife died in 1878 in Ithaca, leaving behind a daughter, Elise. He was married for the second time on 16 February 1881 to the former Miss Friederike Müller. Mr. Juhl enjoys a good reputation as an artful carpenter and is everywhere highly respected and appreciated. He lives at 611 Catherine Street.
