Oberst N. Grumbach,

der gegenwärtige Schatzmeister von Onondaga County, wurde am 30. Januar 1835 in Detroit, Mich., geboren. Sein Vater, Nich. Grumbach, war ein Elsässer und kam 1828 nach Syracuse. Seine noch lebende Mutter, Frau Elisabeth Grumbach, kam mit ihrem Vater Christian Rupprecht, ebenfalls aus dem Elsass, und einigen anderen Familien im Jahre 1831 nach Amerika. Auf der Fahrt nach Buffalo, auf dem Erie-Kanal, fror das Boot fest, und die kleine Gesellschaft beschloss in Syracuse wohnen zu bleiben. Im Jahre 1831 oder 1832 verheirathete sich Nich. Grumbach mit Fräulein Rupprecht und zogen später nach Detroit, wo Oberst Grumbach geboren wurde. Ausser ihm hatten sie noch 6 andere Kinder, von welchen jedoch 3 starben. Es leben noch: Frau Brucker, von Deerfield, Oberst Nich. Grumbach, Georg u. Johann P. Grumbach in Syracuse. Oberst Nich. Grumbach erhielt seine Schulbildung in den hiesigen öffentlichen Schulen und war dann auf mancherlei Weise beschäftigt. In 1854 wurde er Cigarrenmacher in Sperry & Hier’s Geschäft und blieb dort bis 1859, als er mit Gustav Sniper ein gemeinsames Cigarren-Geschäft begann unter der Firma Grumbach & Sniper. In 1862 gab er das Geschäft auf, wurde Hauptmann in Comp. B, des 149. N. Y. Freiwilligen Regiments und diente bis zum Ende des Krieges. Schon in 1856 war er den Syracuse Grays beigetreten, und beim Ausbruch des Krieges diente er im 2. Termin als Supervisor der 2. Ward und war Hauptmann der Monroe Cadetten. Nach dem Krieg ging er wieder in’s Geschäft und zwar zur Fabrikation von Leim. Später war er Grundeigenthums- und Versicherungs-Agent und betrieb eine Restauration. In Albany war er 3 Jahre in einer Staats-Austellung, später Aufseher des hiesigen Regierungs-Gebäudes, Accise-Commissär unter Mayor Vann und vom 1. Jan. 1894 bis 1. Jan. 1897 Court Crier. Im Herbst 1896 wurde er mit grosser Mehrheit als County Schatzmeister erwählt. Ausserdem hat er noch zwei Termine (1868-1869) als Alderman der 4. Ward gedient, war der 1. Quartiermeister von Lilly Post G. A. R., und gehört zu verschiedenen Logen. Er verheirathete sich am 14. September 1862 mit Fräulein Emilie Steiger von hier, hat 4 Kinder und wohnt 1210 Lodi-Strasse. Colonel N. Grumbach, the current treasurer of Onondaga County, was born on 30 January 1835 in Detroit, Michigan. His father, Nicholas Grumbach, was a native of Alsace who came to Syracuse in 1828. His still-living mother, Mrs. Elisabeth Grumbach, and her father, Christian Rupprecht, also from Alsace, came with other families to America in the year 1831. During their journey to Buffalo on the Erie Canal the boat froze and a small group decided to remain and live in Syracuse. In 1831 or 1832 Nicholas Grumbach married Miss Rupprecht and they subsequently moved to Detroit where Colonel Grumbach was born. Besides him, they had six other children, of whom, however, three died. Living still are Mrs. Brucker of Deerfield, [Michigan?], Colonel Nicholas Grumbach, George, and Johann P. Grumbach, all of Syracuse. Colonel Nicholas Grumbach received his education in the local public schools and was then employed in various ways. In 1854 he became a cigarmaker for the firm of Sperry & Hier and remained there until 1859 when he and Gustav Sniper started their own business under the name of Grumbach & Sniper. In 1862 he gave up the business to become Captain of Co. B, 149th N. Y. Volunteer Regiment and served there until the end of the war. Details of this part of his life and of his military career are in the historical section of this book. By 1856 he had joined the Syracuse Grays, and at the time of the outbreak of the war he was serving in his second term as Supervisor of the Second Ward and was Captain of the Monroe Cadets. After the war he returned to business and was involved in the production of glue. Later he was an underwriter and insurance agent and operated a restaurant[?Restauration]. In Albany he was three years in a State [exhibition? Austellung], later Administrator of the local government building, Tax Commissioner under Mayor Vann, and from 1 January 1894 to 1 January 1897 he was Court Crier. In the fall of 1896 he was elected by a large majority as County Treasurer. In addition he served two terms (1868-1869) as Alderman of the 4th Ward, was the first Quartermaster of the Lilly Post, G. A. R., and belongs to several various associations. He was married on 14 September 1862 to Miss Emilie Steiger of this city, has four children, and lives at 1210 Lodi Street.
