Matthæus Gallster was born on 8 April 1821 in Schwabach in Bayern [Bavaria], attended the city school, learned the shoemaker's craft, emigrated in the year 1846 to America, and established himself in Syracuse. Here he worked eight years as a shoemaker, then operated for many years a [specialties and notions/haberdashery shop?] and then relocated to Michigan. In the year 1865 he returned to Syracuse and acquired the farm at Manlius Road and Teall Avenue in the Town of Salina, which is acknowledged far and wide as a model farm. Mr. Gallster is one of the best known and most respected of local citizens and of the oldest pioneers. By untiring diligence he has achieved prosperity, yet still is a long way from thinking of retiring and being idle. He was married to Kunigunde Luttes, from which union resulted 11 children, of whom three are still living. A son and a daughter live with him on the farm and a son resides in Michigan.
